Title

Approaches for in cellulo structural biology with X-rays

Overview

The advent of high-brilliance synchrotron sources, X-ray free-electron lasers, and improved serial data collection strategies has opened a broad range of new scientific opportunities such as time-resolved serial crystallography, including the use of micro-crystals grown within living cells. The workshop will provide practical on-site training on these research topics and technical approaches. The training will be carried out at relevant infrastructures operated by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) on the DESY Hamburg-Bahrenfeld research campus and by the European X-ray Free Electron Laser in Schenefeld, near Hamburg. Topics for training will be:

  • Eukaryotic cell systems for applications in structural biology
  • Intracellular protein folding and crystallization
  • Detection and characterization of protein crystals
  • Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) techniques for applications in structural biology
  • Present and future opportunities in advanced X-ray crystallography
  • Sample delivery techniques for X-ray data experiments

In addition, there will be lectures by leading invited speakers in the field who will present a comprehensive overview on these topics.

The workshop is primarily targeted to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows working on relevant projects in the field. The registration fee for the workshop is 100 €. Affordable accommodation at local guest houses will be available upon request.

Registration deadline: 10.04.2022 (extended deadline)

Applicants are requested to submit a letter of motivation, a support letter by the supervisor, and their CV. Workshop participants will be selected based on the quality and thematic fit of the application. Decision letters to all applicants will be sent out by the workshop organisers middle of April 2022. We are planning to have the workshop by on-site presence of all workshop participants. In case, the format needs to be changed because of pandemic restrictions, all selected participants will be informed as soon as possible.

The workshop is supported by the Röntgen-Ångström Cluster  project ‘InCellSX – Expanding the domain of serial crystallography: membrane protein & in cellulo crystallization’

This workshop is jointly organized by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, the University of Lübeck, the European XFEL and the Hanseatic League of Science (HALOS). HALOS  is financed by the Interreg ÖKS Interreg program and aims to strengthen the collaboration between Hamburg and South-West Scandinavia, bring together the four unique research facilities MAX IV, ESS, DESY and European XFEL, and create a centre for integrated, world-leading Life Science innovation and research.

Venue of the workshop:

EMBL Hamburg, Notkestraße 85, 22607 Hamburg, Germany,

and European XFEL GmbH, Holzkoppel 4, 22869 Schenefeld, Germany
